Valve types, standards, and materials

A quick reference for specifying each valve. Tell us your service conditions and we'll match the right configuration.

Gate valves

A wedge or parallel gate lifts fully out of the flow path, so pressure drop is minimal when the valve is open. Gate valves are built for on/off isolation, not throttling.

Typical service
Isolation on main process, utility, and pipeline lines
Common standards
API 600, API 602, API 603, ASME B16.34
Common materials
WCB, LCB, CF8M, A105, F316
Configurations
Bolted bonnet or pressure seal, rising stem, handwheel, gear, or actuator operation

Globe valves

A disc closes onto a seat at right angles to the flow. Globe valves throttle accurately and shut off tightly, at the cost of a higher pressure drop than a gate valve.

Typical service
Flow regulation, steam service, drains, and vents
Common standards
BS 1873, API 602, ASME B16.34
Common materials
WCB, WC6 and WC9 for high temperature, CF8M, A105
Configurations
T-pattern, Y-pattern, and angle bodies, bolted bonnet or pressure seal

Check valves

A check valve opens with forward flow and closes on its own when flow reverses. No operator or power is needed.

Typical service
Pump discharge, compressor outlets, and equipment protection
Common standards
API 594, BS 1868, API 602
Common materials
WCB, CF8M, ductile iron, A105
Configurations
Swing, dual-plate wafer, and lift or piston designs

Butterfly valves

A disc turns a quarter turn on a central shaft. Butterfly valves are compact, light, and economical in large pipe sizes, and high-performance designs extend them into process service.

Typical service
Water, cooling water, HVAC, and utilities; offset designs for process lines
Common standards
API 609, EN 593, MSS SP-67
Common materials
Ductile iron or carbon steel body, stainless disc, EPDM, PTFE, or metal seat
Configurations
Concentric, double offset, and triple offset; wafer, lug, or double-flanged

Ball valves

A ball with a bore turns a quarter turn to open or close. Ball valves operate quickly and seal tightly, which makes them a default choice for isolation.

Typical service
Isolation in pipelines, gas, chemicals, and general process
Common standards
API 6D, API 608, ISO 17292, ASME B16.34
Common materials
A105, WCB, CF8M, LF2; PTFE, RPTFE, PEEK, or metal seats
Configurations
Floating or trunnion-mounted, full or reduced bore, soft or metal seated

Control valves

A globe or rotary valve driven by an actuator and positioner, adjusting flow continuously in response to a control signal from your plant system.

Typical service
Pressure, level, flow, and temperature control loops
Common standards
IEC 60534, ANSI/FCI 70-2, ASME B16.34
Common materials
WCB, CF8M, and alloy trims matched to your service
Configurations
Globe or rotary body, pneumatic diaphragm or piston actuator, digital positioner. Brands include Fisher.

Standards, materials, and configurations listed are common industry options for each valve type. Ask us for current availability against your specification.

Choosing the right valve

What is the difference between a gate valve and a globe valve?

A gate valve lifts a gate fully out of the flow for on/off isolation with very little pressure drop. A globe valve closes a disc onto a seat, so it can throttle flow accurately but has a higher pressure drop.

Which valve is best for steam service?

Globe valves are common on steam lines where flow must be regulated, and gate valves where only isolation is needed. Body material, often WCB or chrome-moly grades such as WC6 and WC9, depends on temperature and pressure.

When should I choose a butterfly valve over a ball valve?

Butterfly valves are lighter and more economical in large diameters, typically above 6 inches. Ball valves give tighter shut-off and suit smaller lines, gas, and services that need a full, unobstructed bore.

What information do you need to quote a valve?

Valve type, size, pressure class, body and trim material, end connection, operation, quantity, and required delivery date. A datasheet or a photo of the existing nameplate helps.

Not sure which valve you need?
